Commonly referred to as an “Asian Hawaii”, this smallish island has blindingly beautiful beaches, the widest sandy bay and the softest, smoothest sand!
Yearning for a quick getaway over the bank holidays, I packed my bags and left the hustle and bustle of the Lion City for the lure of the famous white sandy beach. Upon arrival, my friendly bus-driver took me on a 90-minute drive through town and we arrived at the harbour, Caticlan. There, I boarded an air-conditioned boat and was promptly served a chilled beverage, cookies and an ice-cold towel. I knew from then on that I was in for a treat. Instead of the regular check-in at the ubiquitous lobby, Discovery Shores opted to provide a personal and customised check-in at the room itself. This gesture is surely welcomed by any weary traveller. Suffice to say my suite was so spacious, it could happily house a family of six! My doublestorey bedroom suite had a living area, two balconies, a great view of the ocean and get this – my very own outdoor jacuzzi! I shivered with delight. This was going to be more than a getaway – this was a dream escapade come true! The 88 well-appointed suites at the resort all come with 32-inch LCD TVs, down pillows, iPod docking facilities and exquisite 24-hour room service. Mimi, my guest relations officer saw to my every request and was attentive to every detail. As it was nightfall, I did not head out to the beach but opted to have dinner. My dinner ompanions were two dashing gentlemen, Mr Erwin Lopez, Director of Operations and Mr Carlos Arboleta, Guest Relations anager. I was treated to an exquisite three-course dinner at the restaurant, Indigo, complete with their signature Mojito.
The next day, I woke up to a scrumptious buffet breakfast at Sands. It was only then that I fully took in the beauty that is Boracay. It is indeed like an Asian Hawaii! The smallish island of roughly 10 kilometers has blindingly beautiful beaches, the widest sandy bay and the softest, smoothest sand I have ever treaded upon. It was as if I was walking on powder! In fact, Boracay is placed Best Overall in Asia according to Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards 2012 and was named World’s Best Island on NBC’s Today Show. Not to be outdone, Discovery Shores, itself a member of the Small, Luxury Hotels of the World, was voted Trip Advisor’s 2013 Traveller’s Choice and secured top honours as the No 1 Hotel Spa in Asia Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2013. Indeed, as Mr Lopez emphasised, Discovery Shores Boracay is all about “Service from the Heart”. This mantra is fully espoused by every single member of the Discovery Shores family. I found a different treat in my room every evening – there were rum balls, banana fritters, chocolate cookies and on my last evening, the staff gave me a photo frame as well as a specially baked Aesthetics and Beauty cake!
If you like me are game for sports and adventure, sign up with the front desk for an array of island activities. I opted for a three-hour island hopping tour to areas such as the bohemian Bulabog Beach that is a kite-surfer’s paradise, Puka Beach, known for its glorious sunsets or choice snorkeling sites such as Crocodile Island. Snorkeling is one of the best things to do in Boracay. The dazzling array of sea-life is simply astounding! I saw gloriously colourful corals, schools of fish as well as an assortment of giant sea urchins and starfishes! Aside from island hopping, one of Boracay’s highlights is Paraw sailing. The paraw is the local sailboat with two outriggers and two sails. The best thing to do is to lie on the hammock, sip on a Mojito and take in the splendour of Mother Nature. This is relaxation heaven. Adrenalin junkies however, are better off kite boarding, fly-fishing or banana boating. I opted to take to the skies and parasailed. The giant parachute whisked me up to the skies and for a while, it was sheer bliss complete silence with no blaring engines and no mindless chatter except for the cool breeze and the amazing view that arrests your senses. Thoroughly inspiring and invigorating! After a day out, you can opt to head out to D’Mall that is Boracay’s main hub or choose to stay in like I did. I pampered myself with a 90-minute Jade and Hot Stone Massage that is the signature treatment of the resort. The simultaneous use of a cool jade and warm stone is the perfect blend of East and West and provides the ultimate healing therapy.
Thoroughly relaxed, I floated to my room and soaked in my personal jacuzzi overlooking the ocean. I wondered, could life possibly get any better? Thank you Discovery Shores Boracay. Because this is Bliss.
