With a façade that glitters magnificently like a beacon of luxury,ION Orchard is a true shopping paradise with something for everyone.
It’s official: Singapore’s Orchard Road is the world’s best shopping street. This is according to a 2012 survey by French marketing consultancy Presence Mystery Shopping. The Paris-based firm sent out 90 mystery shoppers to over 400 retail outlets in 30 cities and Orchard Road emerged top amongst four categories: the cleanliness of the street and retail outlets, the quality of the retail staff, and the friendliness of passers-by.
Singapore is renowned for being a shopper’s paradise and nothing beats the buzz of Orchard Road, the crown jewel of the country’s retail scene. It’s a shopaholic’s dream: 2.2 km of contemporary-styled malls retailing everything from fashion and beauty to luxury goods and electronics; from the biggest
international names to local labels like RAOUL that are making waves around the world.
As you stroll along the wide walkways, you would be awed by the procession of majestic malls lining both sides of the road, each flaunting façades that bear the names ofthe world’s top designer brands, or feature larger-than-life, brightly-lit digital billboards that add to the vibrancy of the pulsating street. Ever since it opened in 2009, ION Orchard has become the epicentre of the retail action with its avant-garde, organic architecture wrapped with cutting-edge light panels. Step inside and you’ll see why the mall was named a finalist for the
‘Best Shopping Experience’ award by the Singapore Tourism Board in 2012. There are more than 330 shops across eight floors offering 640,000 sq ft of fabulous shopping where some of the most luxurious brands like Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Montegrappa are found alongside cult high street brands like H&M.
Another mall with a spectacular frontage is Wisma Atria just next door, which underwent a S$31 million facelift that culminated in the unveiling of a crystalline façade in 2012, replete with double-storey storefronts of several high-end brands. At dusk, the entire 123m geometric frontage glitters in a symphony of pulsing LED downlights.
Take a walk further down Singapore’s famed shopping strip and you’ll come upon Mandarin Gallery, the fairly new retail extension of the adjacent Mandarin Orchard Singapore hotel, where more international designer brands and niche boutiques like couture jeweller La Putri appeal to the wellheeled. Across the road, Heeren is undergoing a revamp and will be renamed Robinsons Orchard, marking the department store’s new six-storey regional flagship. The retail landscape is indeed dynamic, as a number of other older malls like Tangs, Plaza Singapura, and Shaw Centre have recently been revamped to retain their shine amongst the
razzle-dazzle of the new malls added to the scene. By 2014, the shopping belt would have also welcomed a new mall-cum-hotel called Orchardgateway, which is composed of two buildings located on opposite sides of Orchard Road. Throw in a series of exciting events like Fashion Steps Out, a six-week fashion fiesta in which a 600m stretch of Orchard Road was closed to traffic and literally transformed into a fashion runway during the opening night, and it’s really no wonder Orchard Road has garnered a reputation as the best shopping street in the world.
Prime Shopping Indulgences
Besides Orchard Road, there are various pockets of prime shopping hotspots located downtown such as The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, one of Singapore’s two prized integrated resorts. Here, an exquisite collection of luxury brands pander to shoppers with sophisticated tastes. This includes FREYWILLE, a purveyor of artistic fine enamel jewellery from Vienna and Sarcar timepieces from Geneva.
If you’re into gadgets, Funan DigitaLife Mall is a mustvisit. As Singapore’s one-stop IT and electronics haven, it offers the most comprehensive range of the latest gizmos under one roof.
Sale of the Year
One of the biggest events on Singapore’s tourism calendar is no doubt the Great Singapore Sale (GSS), which is organised by the Singapore Retailers Association, Mastercard, and Singapore Press Holdings. For eight weeks each year,Singapore is gripped by shopping fever as shopaholics enjoy great deals, contests, and lucky draws across the island. Currently in its 20th year, the event keeps growing from strength to strength, with total spend reaching about US$1.4 billion in 2012, while the total number of transactions during the sale period hit the 10 million mark for the first time that year. To keep things fresh, GSS 2013 introduced a S$20,000 Biggest Spender Reward amongst a host of other exciting activities.
With such concerted efforts channelled towards enhancing the retail scene, locals and tourists alike can
expect nothing less than a fabulous shopping experience in Singapore.
