Acclaimed Indie rock maestros Alt-J are heading for our shores. Alt-J formed in 2007 when it’s original four members Joe Newman (guitar/lead vocals), Gus Unger-Hamilton (keyboards/vocals), Thom Green (drums) and Gwil Sainsbury (guitar/bass) met at Leeds University. Sainsbury has since parted on good terms with the group but the remaining trio continues to deliver their unique blend of experimental rock, folk and electronica.
Alt-J’s debut album An Awesome Wave was released in 2012. It went on to win the revered British Mercury Prize. The album was also nominated for three Brit awards (Breakthrough Act, British Album of the Year and British Group of the year) and was named as the BBC Radio 6 Music album of 2012.
The symbol of the band, ∆, is actually the delta sign, which can denote “change”or “difference” when used in scientific equations. The symbol is created on a Mac with the keys alt + J, hence the name.
In 2014 they released their second studio album This Is All Yours, debuting at Number 1 on the Official UK Album charts. Their first single “Hunger of the Pine” features a sample of the words “I’m a female rebel” from Miley Cyrus’s song “4×4”.
The band will play five venues in Australia this May before hitting Singapore, then continuing on to the Philippines, Europe, the United States and Canada. This is Alt-J’s first headline show here after their performance at Laneway Festival in 2013.
Catch them on Sunday 17th May 2015 at The Coliseum, Hard Rock Hotel Singapore, Resorts World Sentosa. Tickets are available at Sistic Events.
