This jewel of Vietnam will dazzle you with its splendor and service – and make you never want to leave!
Your luxurious journey begins the moment you land in Danang Airport. Staff from Intercontinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort greet you right after immigration to take your luggage and invite you into the lounge for cold towels and drinks before your 30-minute drive to the resort.
You are once again welcomed warmly as you take your seat in their spanking new Lexus SUV. Lie back and watch the hotel’s video playing, giving you a taste of what awaits you. The ride is pleasant and quick. You know when you’ve reached the hilltop resort when statues of monkeys appear, lining the long and winding driveway.
No video or online images of the resort prepares you for the magnitude and grandeur of seeing it for yourself. My jaw literally dropped when I stepped into the lobby with its head spinning view of Danang’s skyline and beach – not to mention the gorgeous architecture and furniture which successfully melds mystical Vietnamese elements with traditional colonial style. Every corner is an Instagramworthy moment and I can imagine social media addicts going wild and trigger-happy!
I was introduced to my personal butler, who will be taking care of my every need during my stay at the Spa Lagoon Retreat Villa. My package includes daily treatments in my en suite treatment room, chef recommendations for food, personalised aromatherapy and Vietnamese cupping massage workshops as well as access to their exclusive Sun Lounge for breakfast, tea and cocktails. A personal chef is available to cook all your meals in the attached kitchen in the villa, which also comes with private steam room, sauna and jacuzzi – ensuring that you never have to leave your villa. Not only is the Spa Lagoon all encompassing, its bathroom is the size of a three-room HDB flat and comes with the biggest bath tub I have ever seen in my life! A party of 10 could fit in there comfortably – you can only imagine the fun we had!
Intercontinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort houses three restaurants to cater to all palates. Citron is where you have breakfast and a wide array of Vietnamese and International fare. It also boasts the most coveted seats in the resort – private dining booths that look like inverted traditional Vietnamese hats, called non la, float over the hillside 100-metres above sea level. The fresh and lively Vietnamese menu is overseen by Hanoi’s most famous chef Anh Tuyet whose grilled honey chicken was cited by celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain as the finest Vietnamese meal he’d ever tried.
At La Maison 1888, three Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux creates French haute cuisine in the inspired setting of a fictionalised French colonial mansion. This signature restaurant has already become the number one gastronomic destination in Vietnam. For a more casual setting, check out Barefoot Café where you can enjoy pizzas, grilled seafood and pastas with the ocean breeze in your hair and sand under your feet. At night, drinks at the Long Bar is a must-do. This extra-long bar blends contemporary style with colonial elegance on a tranquil beachfront setting. Recline on comfortable day beds set with round wooden trays borrowed directly from Southeast Asian hill tribes and enjoy your cocktails while watching the sun set or cool night breeze.
Spa fanatics will enjoy the HARNN Heritage Spa within the resort. Step into the swanky essential oils mixology bar where you can get a mixologist to blend a customised oil for you based on your Five Elements – fire, wood, metal, water or air. I was treated to their Journey of the Oriental Herbs which started with a full body scrub followed by a firm acupressure massage along my body’s Meridian lines to stimulate internal energy flow. To finish my ultra-relaxing session, a Jade Facial Ritual was done and my therapist gave me an uplifting massage with cold jade stones. I emerged from my spa treatment room with a glowing face and body.
The next day, I was once again cocooned in my treatment room for their Siamese Aromatic Body Therapy which is a fusion of Thai and aromatherapy with a firm palm pressure massage along with deep stretching. Pure bliss indeed! To cap off your spa experience, a manicure and pedicure treatment is recommended at PEDI:MANI:CURE where Bastien Gonzalez, the world’s most sought-after pedicurist, has opened a studio. Bastien’s innovative nail beauty treatment uses miniscule drills tipped with diamond dust and a polishing technique he observed from his grandmother, featuring chamois leather and a pearl buffing cream. Nails are restored to a brilliant natural shine that glow without polish. Find out why he is on every A-list celebrity’s speed dial with a life-changing treatment here.
